The Gold Standard in Family Travel

The themed family suites at Island Shangri-La are unlike anything else in the world — and that’s not an exaggeration. While other Shangri-La locations offer family-themed suites, Hong Kong’s are the most ornate, detailed, and interactive of all. Each one is a fully immersive experience designed to spark a child’s imagination while still offering every luxury adults could want.

I had the opportunity to stay in Hong Kong Wonders and tour several of the other suites while I was there, including Airship Voyage, Fairy Garden, and Treetop Hideout.

Every suite includes:

Our Stay in the Hong Kong Dreams Suite

We stayed in the Hong Kong Dreams suite, and it completely blew us away. The theme celebrates the city’s iconic trams, and the bunk bed is designed like a trolley car — complete with working headlights, blinkers, and a “ding ding” bell. Kids can actually “drive” it, creating endless playtime moments.

The suite also had a slide, a favorite feature, and a TV over the bathtub for the ultimate wind-down at the end of the day. The murals on the walls were interactive too — with hidden images we found using a blacklight provided in the room.

The suite can sleep up to five people, with two bunk beds and a pull-out Murphy bed for a third child or a nanny. There’s also a spacious living and dining area, a separate parent’s bedroom with its own bathroom, and even heated floors in both bathrooms.

I have to say, after touring a few of the suites and staying in this one, I am partial to the Hong Kong dreams. Being able to drive it was perfect for my train obsessed toddler, and I candidly had no idea before staying how interactive it was going to be. As a Hong Kong enthusiast, it felt like a special experience for everyone, and this is the only location that features one.

Best of all, my son was so entertained that we just kicked back in the bed and let him “drive” us around, complete with changing stations and button announcements in multiple languages. They really thought of everything.

It’s not often that a hotel manages to feel like both a playground and a sanctuary, but this one did.

A Floor Made for Families

Stepping onto the kids’ floor feels like entering a storybook. A miniature train winds along the ceiling, setting the tone for the fun ahead. To your left, there’s a pantry that’s stocked throughout the day with pastas, juices, water, and snacks — plus extra pastries in the mornings, grab-and-go bites in the afternoon, and even an ice cream cart from 4 to 5 PM.

There’s also a kids’ club with rotating activities, a splash pad and shallow pool outside, and a dedicated children’s dining area where families can relax together.

And the attention to detail doesn’t stop there. Suites come with kitchenettes, but the staff will happily heat and serve meals for you, accommodating any allergies if you let them know in advance. Even breakfast was a joy — a staff member came around making balloon animals for the kids while parents sipped coffee. Every moment feels easy, thoughtful, and full of joy.

The Premium Suites: Airship Voyage and Fairy Garden

Each themed suite has its own personality, and families often come back to try a different one each time (I would if it were closer!).

There are two in particular that have extra space that families will often book for birthday parties, as they have a sitting room and table as well as cotton candy and popcorn machines:

Airship Voyage

A steampunk-inspired adventure where kids can “fly” their own airship using real levers and glowing dials.

There are interactive elements on the walls as well, and the propeller on the plane can even be turned. This was probably my favorite room of all!

There’s an extra sitting room, perfect for playtime or family movie nights.

Fairy Garden

A princess-themed room where kids wave a magic wand to turn on twinkling lights throughout the suite. The décor is soft, whimsical, and everything my inner six year old could have wanted.

The sitting room is adorned in fruit-covered chandeliers, the sitting room looks like a garden of dreams, and the kitchen is a shade of blue-green I wish I could pull off at home.

Every themed suite includes a slide, interactive play features, and that same level of detail that makes Hong Kong’s property truly one of a kind.

Every Comfort, Thoughtfully Included

Even with all the whimsical details, Island Shangri-La hasn’t forgotten about adult comforts. The parent’s room is elegant and tranquil, with a plush king bed, full second bathroom, and the same attention to detail found throughout the suite.

Having access to a washer and dryer was wonderful, and knowing we could borrow everything from a stroller to a car seat meant we could travel lighter.

The service was flawless — staff seemed to anticipate what we needed before we even asked, from heating up food for our toddler to having fresh pastries ready when we returned from the pool.
